International Diabetes Federation A new digital presence for the International Diabetes Federation

Modernising the brand and website to support global diabetes advocacy.

The International Diabetes Federation is the global voice for people with diabetes, advocating for better treatment, prevention, and awareness.

Optima was appointed to modernise the International Diabetes Federation’s brand and website enhancing usability, accessibility and digital engagement, while carefully respecting the organisation’s legacy.

IDF’s existing site was content-rich but in need of a clearer structure, improved navigation and better visual hierarchy to meet the needs of its diverse global audience. These audiences range from healthcare professionals and researchers to policymakers and people living with diabetes. Our challenge was to evolve the brand and improve the digital experience, without losing the familiarity and trust that the IDF identity has built over decades.

We worked closely with the IDF team to refresh their visual identity, updating the iconic hummingbird emblem – long a symbol of hope and resilience in the diabetes community – and integrating it with the globally recognised blue circle symbol for diabetes awareness. This subtle but significant evolution was supported by a complementary, accessibility-conscious colour palette and a clear, modern visual language for their digital presence.

The new website, developed in WordPress, was designed to be clean, scalable and accessible. It launched with full WCAG AA compliance to better support users with visual, motor or cognitive impairments. Content was restructured and streamlined to improve clarity, while SEO was considered from the outset to retain IDF’s strong search visibility. A multilingual structure was also implemented, with Weglot integration enabling localisation in French and Spanish, supporting both international engagement and multilingual SEO.

The result is a digital platform that reflects IDF’s authority in the field and strengthens its position as a leader in global diabetes advocacy. The site makes IDF’s extensive resources more accessible and usable, helping to ensure they reach the people who need them most.

We’re proud to have continued to support the International Diabetes Federation team in developing other elements of their digital resources. This includes launching the Diabetes Atlas – an interactive platform presenting global, regional and country-level data in a format designed to inform policy, support healthcare provision, and raise awareness around the world.
