3D Renders prove a big success

When Vince Cable, the Secretary of State for Business, arrived at Tata Steel in Rotherham one cold Monday morning to announce the funding of a £22 million state of the art automotive prototyping plant known as ‘the Proving Factory’, he proudly stood in front of an animated screen display created by Optima.
A crucial part of that display was a series of 3D renders designed to show how the massive factory at Tata Steel’s Brinsworth site would be transformed from its current disused state into an ultra modern manufacturing hub at the forefront of Britain’s high tech engineering future. A future where intellectual property adds tangible value to industry.
Optima created the series of before and after renders by piecing together information from photos and rough measurements in order to generate a 3D model of the building shell using a software programme called SketchUp. More detail, such as textures and CNC machinery was then added before rendering and treating the static views in Photoshop to achieve a realistic feel and show the huge transformation the factory will undergo.
Once the 3D renders were finalised, they were incorporated into a dynamic PowerPoint presentation that also contained a CGI animation, partner logos and key messages about the proving factory. On the day of the Secretary of State’s visit, the factory interior was dramatically lit and the PowerPoint presentation back-projected onto a massive screen behind the podium.
The Proving Factory is a collaborative project between major companies and groups in the UK motor industry to industrialise and validate new engineering technologies and supply them to vehicle manufacturers. It is envisaged that The Proving Factory will create over 250 direct new jobs in assisted areas, where new employment is greatly needed, and around 1,000 more in the manufacturing and engineering supply chain.
